Koha is an open source integrated library system (ILS) using the GPL license. Koha provides all the software tools you need to run your library, such as:
Circulation to check in and out books and other materials to patrons;
Cataloging to download, edit and manage bibliographic records;
OPAC (online public access catalog) to allow your users to search for books and do much more in their own customized web interface;
Acquisitions to manage the purchases,vendors and budgets used by your library; and
Serials Management to receive, claim, and manage your journals and serial titles.
Koha is the first open source ILS. It has pioneered innovative features in the ILS from its initial FRBR-like design to the first use of the OCLC xISBN service in an ILS.

Most software companies treat their software code as closed source secret proprietary information. The public never sees the software until the product reaches the market. Most software companies require those using their software to abide by a very restrictive software license which restricts use to impose licensing fees along with other restrictions, and prohibits modification or redistribution. Open source software under the GNU General Public License (GPL) has none of those constraints.
Open source code is available to its users, allowing users to study the code.
The GPL ensures that users always have the freedom to study, use, modify, and redistribute their modified version of the software.
As more and more users add to the open source code, the code grows more and more robust and the feature set expands. The entire community benefits from sharing the work of each of its members.
